Building Success Early In Your Leadership Journey

1) Build Relationships:

Leadership is influence. And influence is about nurturing relationships, with those above you, at your level and those you serve. You are only as influential as the relationships you nurture. Clarify what your values are. Then let those values inform the kind of leader you want to be. Core values (link to list of core values) embraced by leaders include curiosity, courage, growth, etc. Allow your core values to inform your approach to your relationships.

2) Read Every Day:

The most effective leaders read every day. Warren Buffet famously dedicates 80% of his time to reading. When asked about keys to success Buffet replied “Read 500 pages every day. That’s how knowledge works. It builds up, like compound interest.” Mark Cuban reads about 3 hours a day. Bill Gates reads 50 books a year. Tony Robbins took a speed-reading course and read 700 books in 7 years. Former PepsiCo CEO Indra Nooyi was known for carrying a bag of reading material with her that she read every night. One of the best habits you can build as a leader is the habit of daily reading. It sets a good foundation of knowledge that you can tap into. The most important aspect of reading everyday as a leader is as you advance in your leadership journey your decisions will carry more weight and affect more lives. You want your decisions to be as informed as possible.

3) Take Care of Yourself:

Get in the habit of taking care of yourself physically and mentally. Exercise most days of the week, eat healthy, learn to meditate, get enough sleep. Leadership, at a high level, has been likened to performing as a professional athlete. Before they get to this stage, successful athletes learn how to take care of their minds and bodies in order to stay sharp, execute successfully and prevent injury. This is especially true in order to remain successful and achieve longevity in an athletic career. Leadership is stressful. Learning how to care for your mind and body as you grow in your leadership journey will make you a more effective leader and avoid burnout.

Triple C Action Points

1) Build Relationships:

Pick 1 person a year above you, at your level and who you serve to get to know and build a meaningful relationship with. Commit to adding 1 more every year.

2) Read Every Day:

Make a commitment to read for at least 30 minutes every day. Commit to adding on an extra 10 minutes every 6 months.

3) Take Care of Yourself:

Commit to making one small change in self-care. This could be a commitment to exercise 3 days a week, get 8 hours of sleep, meditate for 5 minute a day or cutting 1 poor eating habit. Commit to adding on to this every 6 months.
